How did OREO start?

OREO was
first manufactured in Feburary, 1912 and was originally sold in bulk tin cans
for 30 US cents a pound. These tin cans were the first in their day to have glass
tops to allow consumers to view the cookies.
The original
OREO was an embossed cookie with a thin wreath-like design on the outer edge,
with the OREO name appearing on the plain surface of the cookie.
The
design that we see today was developed in 1916 and modified in 1952 to include
the Nabisco Cookie Company's colophon.
